We move along through life,
striving to meet each goal.
Do we allow our desires
to overtake our soul?
Our Father offers gifts
to those who seek His face.
We struggle with His timing
when what we need is grace.
God’s gifts we may not choose;
His Spirit gives as He wills.
As we offer up our praise,
our hearts He will surely fill.
As members of one body,
we have separate gifts to give.
They knit us closer together
and enable us to live.
God joined us for a reason.
Each member has a role.
No one is less important,
for together we are whole.
Let love be what we pursue;
it is the greatest gift of all.
If we focus on its meaning,
God will show each one his call.
Three things will last forever – faith, hope, and love – and the greatest of these is love. 1 Corinthians 13:13
Gifts can come in many forms, such as something material or an act of kindness by family, a friend or even a stranger. As part of the body of Christ, the Holy Spirit gives each person spiritual gifts of His choosing. The gifts are diverse and no one gift is more important than another. As we each use our gifts, God’s love should permeate our every thoughts and actions.
We may think we have no special gifts or not recognize what our gift or gifts are. God made each person unique. Just as the body has many parts and all serve important functions, each of us has a role in bringing unity to the body of Christ. A sense of independence and pride often make us feel like we have to do things ourselves, or they just won’t get done correctly. We also may feel it’s a sign of weakness to ask for help.
God desires to minister through us so that we can better serve and love others. As we seek a more intimate relationship with our Father, His Holy Spirit will empower us to live godly lives and lead us in using our gifts. As we realize our need for each other, we learn to recognize and appreciate the uniqueness of each person.
There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all. 1 Corinthians 12:4-6
